Microfilmed correspondence of King, brigadier general with the "Iron Brigade" (the 2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin and 19th Indiana Infantry Regiments), 1861-1863, concerning outfitting of the brigade, including letters to Amasa Cobb, commander of the 5th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, and to Wisconsin Governor A. W. Randall. Some letters concern the pursuit and capture of John H. Surratt, implicated in the assassination of President Lincoln, in Italy while King was U.S. minister to the Papal States in Rome, 1863-1867. In original form are four documents including a passport, two State Dept. letters of instruction, and King's certificate of appointment as U.S. minister signed by Lincoln and William H. Seward.

Alexander Williams Randall (1819-1872) was educated as a lawyer. He served as Republican governor of Wisconsin, 1857-1861, and was U.S. Postmaster-general, 1866-1869. He appears to have been executor of the will of Elizabeth Gamble Wirt, wife of William Wirt (1772-1834). Elizabeth Gamble Wirt, daughter of William and Elizabeth Wirt, married Admiral Louis Malesherbes Goldsborough who was a prominent figure in the U.S. Navy during the Civil War.
